When you are at the stoplight, and the light turns green, the car will then be in motion again. However, your body will want to stay at rest even when the car is moving. Your body will be jerked backwards.

That will cause very major injuries. However, if your seat belt is on safely, it will hold your body back from flying forward. The seat belt will hold you in place, so your inertia can’t take over by keeping you in motion. This is why it is very important to always have your seatbelt on in the car.
